Frequently asked questions

Is Sharpen image free?

Fast runs in your browser and is free with no limit. High Quality and Restore old photos give you free runs every day, with or without an account; after that, each run costs credits, which needs an account. See the pricing page for the current numbers. Free runs reset every day at 00:00 UTC. When your free runs are used and your credit is not enough, the tool tells you and offers Fast mode. If our server cannot answer, the image is enhanced on your device, the tool tells you, and the run is not counted.

What do the three modes do?

High Quality runs on our server: it restores faces with GFPGAN, enlarges a small image with Real-ESRGAN, and sharpens a large photo at its own size. Restore old photos does the same, and first removes scratches and peeling. Fast sharpens the edges in your browser: nothing is uploaded, but no new detail is added.

Does it make the image larger?

Only a small one. In High Quality and Restore old photos, an image of 1200 px or less on the longest side comes back larger: a maximum of 4× its width and height, and a maximum of 1920 px on the longest side. A larger photo keeps its size. Fast keeps the original size, up to 8192 px on the longest side. If our server cannot answer and the image is enhanced on your device, the same 1200 px rule applies: a small image is enlarged to a maximum of 2048 px on the longest side, to spare your device's memory, and a larger photo is sharpened at its own size, up to 8192 px.

Can it fix old photos with scratches?

Yes, for thin, long scratches and cracks that stand out from the area around them. Select Restore old photos, or tick Remove scratches & peeling. The tool fills only those lines from the pixels around them and leaves fine texture as it is. It does not fill lines on a face: the face restorer works on faces instead. It can miss a faint scratch, it can take a thin real line, such as a wire or a strand of hair, for a scratch, and it cannot rebuild large missing areas.

Can it fix a very blurry photo?

It works best on soft, slightly blurry or small photos. It cannot bring back detail that strong blur or camera shake removed. Faces are the exception: GFPGAN redraws their details, so compare the result with the original.

Are my photos stored?

No. In High Quality and Restore old photos, your image is sent over HTTPS to our server, processed in memory, and never written to disk or stored. It is not used to train AI, and no person sees it. In Fast mode, the image does not leave your device.

Which files can I use?

JPEG, PNG and WebP, up to 25 MB each, one image at a time. All three modes, and the run on your device when our server cannot answer, give a PNG that keeps the transparency when the image has transparent areas, and a JPG for every other image.
